Auditory Comprehension

Standard 6

    Student listens to and demonstrates comprehension of messages, dialogues, stories, communications, advertisements and simple verbal communication.

Descriptor

Student:

- Interprets, processes, and relates oral messages, dialogues, stories, conversations,
  advertisements and simple verbal communication to his/her experiential background.

- Reacts to verbal instructions.
- Responds to questions based on narratives dialogues or stories presented electronically or
   by the teacher.
- Listens to get the main idea of a story and recall auditory sequence.
- Makes drawings based on oral descriptions, narrations or commands given.

Oral Comprehension

Standard 7

    Student uses the acquired language to engage in oral exchange of ideas. Student interacts verbally in appropriate contexts using critical thinking skills such as relating. classifying and sequencing.

Descriptors

Student:

- Is given opportunities to engage in conversations to express him/herself orally, interacts, and
  exchanges ideas.
- Uses the language to promote free communication with others.
- Responds verbally to questions involving self-identify or information related to self, home,
   school, and the community.

- Describes pictures or objects.
- Responds orally to commands, instructions, statements and questions.
- Recalls details and sequences by participating in:

- Uses appropriate courtesy phrases in his/her communication.
- Expresses likes, dislikes, and preferences in his/her communication with others.
- Talks about the main ideas of narratives, dialogues, and stories read
- Is involved in conversations that require a sender and a receive of messages.
- Records oral messages appropriate to grade level themes.
- States orally the cultural chraracteristics of Puerto Rico and the United States.
- Recalls short poems and analyzes character traits.
- Sings popular American songs.
- Paraphrases orally details, characterizations, and social events.

Reading Comprehension/Literary Appreciation

Standard 8

    Student reads to enjoy him/herself, obtain information, interact with concepts and ideas, and enrich his/her vision of the history and culture of people throughout the world.

Descriptors

Student:

- Reads words, phrases, and sentences that convey different meanings depending on the
   context.
- Reads to comprehend the text, using his/her previous experiences and feelings so as to help
   facilitate learning.
- Is immersed in the reading of meaningful texts to strengthen phonics and other aspects of
   word identification.
- Reads stories to recall the story elements:

- Uses reading as a critical thinking process in reacting to the written  content when showing
   appreciation or disapproval.
- Reads to enjoy, appreciate, analyze, and obtain information as a  tool for life-long learning
   experiences.
- Reads to sing songs which will reinforce structures being practiced.
- Engages in interpreting figurative language: simile and personification.
- Reads summaries of recent movies.
- Distinguishes fantasy from reality.
- Distinguishes the parts of a book: title, page, table of contents, and glossary.

- Reads to develop the following skills:

- Listens to, reads silently and orally different pieces of literature and is encouraged to share
  and retell them.
- Reads to prepare simple book reports and summaries.

Written Communication

Standard 9

    Student writes to convey meaning, transmit messages, and express thoughts and feelings. Student writes creative stories. biographies, journal entries, demonstrating written communicative competency.

Descriptors

Student:

- Copies and/or writes words, phrases, and sentences and uses them in transmitting messages.
- Takes dictation of words, phrases, sentences, and short paragraphs using writing mechanics.
- Uses words, phrases, and sentences to write familiar texts, messages, and express feelings
   using appropriate syntax.
- Uses their schema to write guided, creative and/or cooperative stories, dialogues,
   paragraphs, and journal entries.
- Writes and makes use of proper writing conventions.
- Engages in conversations through the use of computers. Makes corrections according to
  dictionary.
- Paraphrases work by writing and using synonyms and antonyms.
- Writes after reading, thus practicing conflict-resolutions techniques.

-Analysis and discussion of the writing samples produced.
- Rewriting, editing.

Level 2 - Grades 4-6

Cultural Awareness

Standard 10

    Student explores and responds to concepts related to the life and culture
of other countries.

Descriptors

Student:

- Recognizes and describes similar and different, relationships in his/her culture and other
   cultures.
- Understands and accepts the cultural trends and awareness that grow out of experiences.

- Describes his/her family orally or in writing.
- Understands and accepts similarities and differences in his/her culture and the culture of
   others when she/he compares and talks about customs, holidays, typical foods, and major
   events.
- Socializes and take turns showing acceptance, understanding; and respect for others in a
  diverse cultural classroom or outdoor setting.
